Fiber optics can link buildings, communications rooms and network segments where suitable capacity, distance and electrical isolation are required
Single-Mode and Multimode Fiber
The appropriate fiber type depends on route length, network design, active equipment, wavelengths and approved specification. Select optical modules, connectors and patch leads as an integrated system rather than as unrelated components
Routes and Cable Protection
Review indoor or outdoor installation conditions, ducting, cable pulling forces, bend radius and joint locations. A route plan should identify both end points and allow safe access for maintenance
Splicing, ODF and Labelling
Fusion splices and terminations require suitable equipment, clean connectors and protected joints. Each strand should be identified at both ends and recorded on the optical distribution frame plan
Optical Tests and Acceptance
Optical loss testing and OTDR analysis provide different information about the link. The acceptance criteria and test wavelengths should be agreed for the project. Store the results against each fiber identifier
